The first-ever Expressions of Brazil Festival<\/strong> brings sizzling Brazilian flavours to Harbourfront Centre<\/strong> from July 16-18 2010<\/strong>. This FREE<\/strong> three-day festival celebrates Brazil\u2019s rich cultural traditions and multiculturalism through contemporary Brazilian music, food, film and art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International concert highlights include performances from Brazil\u2019s 25-year music veteran Laura Finnociario<\/strong> who gracefully combines bossa-nova, samba, jazz and funk, followed by 17-year-old pop sensation Mallu Magalh\u00e3es<\/strong> and a late-night party with Brazil\u2019s DJ Raul Vax (with local DJ Branko) <\/strong>spinning the hottest progressive and electro house music. Local musical contributions are provided by Toronto\u2019s own Sinal Alberto,<\/strong> an exciting new jazz quartet featuring Luanda Jones<\/strong> and Gordon Sheard<\/strong>, newcomer Bruno Capinan <\/strong>who croons his sensual and provocative Portuguese prose and the vibrant high-energy beats of Baque de Bamba, <\/strong>lead by Aline Moralis,<\/strong> Sambacana<\/strong>, Roda de Samba,<\/strong> Batacuda Carioca<\/strong>, Mulambo Groove <\/strong>and Escola de Samba<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expressions of Brazil also showcases international and Canadian visual artists at the Brazil<\/strong>: Many Eyes, Different Visions<\/strong> exhibition. Renowned Brazilian artists Emilio Boschilia<\/strong>, Ivana Panizzi<\/strong>, Renato Soares<\/strong>, Soraya Montaheiro<\/strong> and Gabriela Greeb<\/strong> join with local artists Avi Neto<\/strong> and Chris Harrison<\/strong> to present a survey of contemporary Brazilian art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course no Brazilian festival is complete without traditional Capoeira, presented by\u00a0Capoeira<\/strong>\u00a0Camar\u00e1\u00a0<\/strong>and food programming.\u00a0Chef Mario Cassini\u00a0<\/strong>of\u00a0Caj\u00fa<\/strong>\u00a0Restaurant<\/strong>\u00a0prepares delicious culinary offerings that represent the diverse tastes of Brazil. Families can also enjoy kid-friendly programming with special workshops including soccer by\u00a0Brazilian Soccer Academy<\/strong>, pinhole photography by\u00a0ImageMagica<\/strong>\u00a0and drumming along with three days of film screenings in partnership with the\u00a0Brazilian Film Festival of Toronto (BRAFFT<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The big idea behind all programming in this year\u2019s World Routes summer festivals is \u201cglobalocal\u201d, or global to local, a theme programmed into each festival to bring together rich artistic traditions from around the corner to around the globe!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bandleader, vocalist and percussionist Aline Morales<\/strong> heads up Baque De Bamba<\/strong>, a Toronto-based, ultra-urban, Afro-Brazilian drumming troupe performing a blend of different African rhythms from the northeast of Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Batucada Carioca Samba Group<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friday, July 16, 9:30-11 p.m. (Sirius Stage)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Batucada Carioca<\/strong> is a group of singers and musicians from Toronto\u2019s Brazilian community. Together they present a heavy Brazilian swing that is melodically accompanied by the cavaquinho (small string instrument), guitar and trombone. Led by Maninho Costa<\/strong>, the repertoire includes the songs of Beth Carvalho, Jo\u00e3o Norgueira and classics such as \u201cAquarela do Brasil.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a sensual voice and provocative Portuguese prose, Toronto-based Bruno Capinan<\/strong> just released his debut album Gozo<\/em>, which combines electronic and instrumental sounds with the rawness of Afro-Brazilian percussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roda de Samba<\/strong> performs typical Brazilian \u201chang out\u201d music, including popular roots samba songs, accompanied by Brazilian drumming. International Artists<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emilio Boschilia<\/strong> is a Brazilian painter, graphic artist, engraver and photographer who since childhood has been drawn to themes related to the Brazilian natural environment and indigenous peoples. Bursting with colour, Indio, Bicho, Mato <\/em>is a collection of paintings by the self-taught artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ivana Panizzi<\/strong> was born in Po\u00e7os de Caldas, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. She graduated in visual arts from the \u201cinstituto Superior de Arte in Havana, Cuba, where she also studied cinema and television. Her artwork can be found in private galleries worldwide and is characterized by researching and recycling non-conventional materials, both in her paintings and installations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Renato Soares<\/strong> is a photographer and documentarian of Brazilian art and culture. He travels to beautiful places in Brazil to record the biological diversity of plants and animals, ethnic groups with their costumes and rituals, people from the melting pot of races and traditions of Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soraya Montanheiro<\/strong> was born in S\u00e3o Paulo. She worked as a chemical engineer for 15 years before pursuing her love and passion for photography. Her photos have been published in Festas e Eventos, Donna<\/em> and Estado de <\/em>S\u00e3o Paulo.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriela Greeb<\/strong> is an author, producer and director of short films, documentaries, and video installations. She lived for years in Europe, where she became familiar with the audiovisual world. Once back in Brazil she founded Homemadefilms<\/em>, an independent studio located in S\u00e3o Paulo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local Artists<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avi Neto<\/strong> is a graphic designer who has been painting since the age of 10 and specializes in the surreal. Neto was born in Brazil and uses elements and ideas from his native country to foster and create contemporary themes in paintings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chris Harrison<\/strong>\u00a0is a Toronto-based creative commercial photographer with 30 years of experience. The subjects of his photographs stretch from food, as seen in his recent mosaics series, to the depiction of everyday life in Bahia, Brazil. His work has come to the attention of the Brazilian government, which has purchased his prints and posters to display in their consulate in Toronto. His images of\u00a0S\u00e3o Paulo, taken over the past five years, look at the city in parts, not as a whole, showing elements of activity and architecture not often seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
